Letter: Say ‘no’ to warming planet further

President Obama: It’s clear the oil industry is so powerful and money is such a driving factor that you forgot what you said about protecting the Earth for future generations. You said “yes” to Shell drilling for oil in Arctic waters.

More than 97 percent of scientists predict we have a 2-degree Celsius limit that the Earth can heat and have a viable planet. That means quit digging for oil/coal/gas — fossil fuels already available may take us to a point of no return. We must switch to renewable energy as many countries are doing, creating new industries and jobs along the way.

Thank you, President Obama, for reminding us the power is in the hands of the people. We must act locally to prevent Tesoro-Savage’s proposed oil terminal in Vancouver bringing flammable oil in trains through the region, onto barges to Asia to be burned, and warming the planet more.

The Port of Vancouver said “yes” to a greedy oil company. I say “no” to an oil terminal here.

President Obama, wake up and remember in your heart what you already know. And even if you don’t, there are many of us who are remembering for you.
