A Vancouver man accused of crashing his motorcycle and critically injuring his passenger before fleeing appeared in Clark County Superior Court on Friday.

Justin Robert Kolke, 27, faces allegations of vehicular assault and felony hit-and-run, both domestic violence-related charges. The allegations stem from an early-morning incident on May 16.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Superior Court, Clark County sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Preston spotted three reckless vehicles near Northeast 70th Street and Northeast 72nd Avenue.

A search ensued. Shortly thereafter, Deputy Jon Pound found a motorcycle lying on its side and a male rider standing next to it in the 7300 block of Northeast 62nd Avenue. The man ran, and Pound found an injured passenger on the ground behind the motorcycle. The passenger, identified as Ashley Zumbrennen, was discharged from the hospital Tuesday, a hospital spokesman said. Zumbrennen is Kolke’s girlfriend.

Kolke was arrested Thursday.

At Friday’s hearing, Judge Derek Vanderwood appointed Chris Ramsay to represent Kolke.

Kolke is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday, May 29.
