ANTIOCH, Calif. — A man has surrendered peacefully after releasing two hostages in a tense standoff with police in Northern California.

Authorities say the incident began around midday Wednesday with a report of a carjacking. After a brief police pursuit, the man crashed the stolen car and went into a nearby Arco gas station and convenience store.

The man then took two people hostage in the convenience store. Officers from multiple police agencies surrounded the building with guns drawn. One hostage was quickly released, but the other remained inside until about 3:30 p.m. when the suspected carjacker agreed to surrender.

He came out with his arms up, lay face down in the parking lot and was quickly handcuffed. No injuries were reported.
