Letter: Stewart’s proposal proactive

Kudos to Clark County Councilor Jeanne Stewart. Proposing that Clark County government be proactive and accelerate the repayment of Clark County’s $122.5 million debt instead of buying everyone a cup of coffee may be considered radical. But, it is the responsible thing to do.

Everyone agrees that paying down personal mortgage or credit card debt is a lofty and financially responsible goal. Whether or not we choose to reduce personal debt and save the associated interest is a measure of our ability to be responsible adults. Responsibility in government is no different. In fact, government bodies should set the example by taking every reasonable opportunity to reduce or eliminate debt.

There’s nothing wrong with a councilor’s legacy that says, “I accelerated the repayment of Clark County’s $122.5 million debt and saved its residents thousands of dollars in the process.” It might cost us a few lattes, but my wife and I would gladly vote for that.

Keep up the good fight, Stewart.
