Letter: America must be compassionate

By
Published:

America is proudly maturing into a compassionate country through centuries of learning from horrendous mistakes. Now, some Americans are screaming loudly to make the same horrible mistakes again. After coming to the new world as refugee immigrants, our ancestors brutally removed those already here from their tribal homes and literally forced them into harsh reservation conditions.

For cheap labor, we kidnapped people from Africa and enslaved men, women and children, even fighting a Civil War where family members slaughtered other family members.

We refused refuge for Jewish families escaping death and sent the ships back to Europe.

We forcibly removed Japanese-American citizens from their homes and businesses and interred them in cramped internment camps while permanently taking away homes and businesses.

We were continuing to learn from our mistakes, but now loud voices are calling for massive deportations and denying refugees from war-torn countries.

Please stand and speak up for sanity and help quiet the hateful voices.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
