SEATTLE — The University of Washington and the Washington state Department of Health will receive a combined $46.3 million in federal funding over four years to help improve health-care quality, access and education.

The money is part of a $685 million initiative announced this week by Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell as part of the Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative that aims to support doctors and clinicians nationwide.

The awards were granted to 29 medical-group practices, regional health systems and regional extension centers to offer peer-to-peer support to primary and specialty doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists and their practices.

The UW will receive $5.4 million in the first year of the grant and $30 million during the full four years. The award aims to impact more than 6,700 clinicians and 1.9 million patients in an area that includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Wyoming.

Washington State Department of Health will receive about $4 million in the first year and $16.3 million over the four-year span. The award will affect 5,600 pediatric and specialty practices.
