CLEVELAND — Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams broke down in tears while asking for the public’s help at the scene of a shooting that took the life of a 5-month-old girl, the third fatal shooting of a child in the last four weeks.

Tears pooling in his eyes, Williams told reporters Thursday that “this shouldn’t be happening in our city.”

Williams has been chief since February 2014 and a Cleveland police officer since 1986. At a news conference on Friday he implored residents to call police and provide information about shootings and gun violence.

The Cuyahoga County prosecutor said Friday that a $25,000 reward is being offered for information about Thursday’s shooting of Aavielle Wakefield, who was in a car with her mother and grandmother.

A 5-year-old boy was fatally shot Sept. 4, and a 3-year-old boy Sept. 15 in Cleveland.
