PORTLAND — A cougar believed to have been responsible for killing livestock near Canby has been shot and killed south of Oregon City.

The Oregonian reports a livestock owner on Monday shot the animal that had been blamed for the deaths of more than two dozen sheep, goats, llamas and alpacas reported since mid-September.

The carcass of the 126-pound cat was examined by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. The male cougar was determined to be in healthy condition and about 3 1/2 to 4 years old.

Williams says Oregon has a robust cougar population, and the cat could have been pushed out onto rural residents’ properties, where he learned to live around humans.

The shooting of the animal was a legal kill of a livestock-killing predator under Oregon law.
