TACOMA — Washington state lawmakers are asking Chinese President Xi Jinping to consider loaning some pandas to the Pacific Northwest.

The News Tribune in Tacoma reports that about a third of the Legislature has signed a letter to Xi which was sent before the Chinese president’s visit to Washington state last month.

So far, 12 state senators and 31 state House members have signed the letter asking the Chinese president to consider loaning the state pandas.

Four zoos across the country have pandas in residence, but none are in the Northwest. Pandas are at zoos in Atlanta, San Diego, Memphis and Washington, D.C.

Sen. Bruce Dammeier, R-Puyallup, says if negotiations proceed with China it would take a year or more before bears arrive.
