Hudson’s Bay — The Rose City Chapter of Women in Aviation hosted its first Girls in Aviation Day on Sept. 26 at the Pearson Field Aero Maintenance Flight Center. More than 30 girls participated, including guests from as far away as Longview and Hillsboro, Ore.

The day was intended to get girls interested in pursing a career in any aspect of aviation, and featured bracelet making, face painting, a scavenger hunt to eight hangars, a visit to the Pearson Field Education Center and flying a flight simulator. Professionals from a few airlines, a flight school and air traffic controllers were on hand to talk about their jobs, and eight hangar tenants spoke to the group about why they fly and their planes, which the girls were also allowed to sit in.

“I, personally, was so tickled at how excited the pilots were to share their excitement and passion for flying with the kids,” wrote Theresa Nelson, director of flight operations at the maintenance center, in an email.
