Wolf thought to be dead found in southern Oregon

SALEM, Ore. — A wolf thought to be dead has turned up in southern Oregon.

The wolf, known as OR3, wears a radio collar, which biologists last heard from in September 2011 near Prineville.

The Statesman Journal reported that the wolf showed up this summer on a hunter’s trail camera in northern Klamath County. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed last week that the wolf in the photo is OR3.

OR3 is originally from the Imnaha Pack in northeastern Oregon and dispersed from the pack in May 2011. It was fitted with a VHF radio collar, which unlike GPS technology, requires biologists to locate it with special telemetry equipment in the field.

After a long silence, many believed the wolf was dead.

In southern Oregon, OR3 joins the famous OR7 and his Rogue Pack, as well as the Keno Pair.
