Highlights of the ongoing exhibits and attractions around town

• Word Play Month, through September. Celebrate the world of words and storytelling with themed activities, book drives, a mini library and art projects.

Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, Open daily during daylight hours. 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for Carty Unit and Auto Tour Route. River S Unit, on South Hillhurst Road, south of Pioneer Street, Ridgefield. Carty Unit, 28908 N.W. Main Ave., Ridgefield; $3 per vehicle.

• “The Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not,” through Sept. 7. This exhibit explores the science behind some of Robert Ripley’s compendium of oddities and fantastic feats, with experiments, challenges, artifacts and multimedia interactive stations.

Oregon Zoo, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. 4001 S.W. Canyon Road, Portland; $11.50; $10 for ages 65 and older; $8.50 for ages 3-11. Free for ages 2 and younger. $4 during Second Tuesdays.
