TACOMA — A preliminary look into how much it cost Pierce County to host the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay this year found that county taxpayers will cover about $700,000 of the $2 million price tag for security.
The News Tribune reports county officials say they’ll break even at the very least from June’s sporting event.
The largest public expense from the event was security costs. Initial estimates put the number of officers needed daily during the event at 450, but that number grew to nearly 600 when attendance outweighed expectations.
County officials still await a final report on U.S. Open expenses. Deputy County Executive Kevin Phelps says once all bills are paid, including those to the sheriff’s department and golf course improvements, leftover funds will go toward county debt.
