SALEM, Ore. — A popular hot springs in southern Oregon has been shut down after tests revealed high levels of the bacterium E. coli.

The Statesman Journal reports that federal officials say Umpqua Hot Springs near Roseburg, Ore., is closed to swimming, soaking and wading until further notice.

Umpqua National Forest officials plan to test the water at a later date. They will notify the public once testing is complete and it’s safe to enter the hot springs.

A representative of the forest says officials are working to improve the quality and management of the water at Umpqua Hot Springs.
