CARSON, Calif. — Fanendo Adi opened the scoring for Portland in the 52nd minute, and Nat Borchers’ own goal in the 84th helped the Los Angeles Galaxy tie the Timbers 1-1 on Sunday night at Carson, Calif.

Diego Valeri’s diagonal lead pass set up Adi as he peeled away from the defensive back line and finished with a low right-footed shot — his fourth goal of the season.

Borchers made a diving attempt to clear Sebastian Lletget’s cross, but inadvertently smashed the header into the Timbers’ goal.

Nigel de Jong received a yellow card in the 73rd minute for a foul that sent the Timbers’ Darlington Nagbe to the bench with what appeared to be a significant injury. The play figures to be reviewed by the MLS disciplinary committee.

Portland coach Caleb Porter changed formations. He inserted Jack Jewsbury alongside Diego Chara as a defensive midfielder and swapped the sides for centerbacks Borchers and Jermaine Taylor, putting Borchers on the left next to Chris Klute in his first appearance for Portland at left back.

Porter said the back six turned in a strong performance against a Galaxy attack that challenges defenses by moving attackers around the field.

The Timbers (1-2-2) have one win at StubHub Center in eight visits; the Galaxy (2-1-2) extended their unbeaten run to 39 of the last 41 home games.

Portland has two home matches in the next six days, hosting FC Dallas on Wednesday and San Jose on Saturday.
