TACOMA — A suspect in a drive-by killing has been returned to Tacoma after nine years on the run.

The FBI says 28-year-old Gabriel Nevarez was arrested in Michoacan, Mexico, in February and transferred to agency custody in Mexico City on Thursday. The FBI flew him back to Washington late Thursday night.

Nevarez, a U.S. citizen, was wanted in the death of 21-year-old Kyle Grinnell Jr. on Feb. 21, 2007, in Tacoma. Grinnell was pressure-washing a sidewalk when he was shot and killed; investigators say the gunman was aiming for someone else.

Nevarez has been charged in Pierce County Superior Court with first-degree murder, assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.

It was not immediately known if he had obtained a lawyer.
