Letter: Dog story was preventable

I am very happy that William Jones got his dog, Hunter, back (“Firefighter thankful to family that returned dog,” Aug. 23). I am very sorry that Hunter did not have a collar that identified him, so that this situation would have not occurred. I am very sorry that Hunter did not have a chip on him so the Humane Society could have notified Jones that he had been found. I am very sorry that his friend that he left Hunter with did not notify him that the dog had escaped, or contact the Humane Society to look for him. I am very sorry that the wonderful family who adopted Hunter after he had been at the Humane Society for 10 days had to part with a dog they had adopted into their family. I am totally baffled as to why the Humane Society is receiving a backlash for the service they rendered.

Jones has an opportunity to do a great service by using this totally preventable situation to express the need for animals to have identifying collars and chips on them, and to thank the Humane Society for taking care of Hunter for all the time it did.
