We enjoyed the Green Home Street Fair last weekend and seeing the innovations in heating and cooling, building materials, and new appliances. The homes were beautiful. However, it was disappointing to notice what was missing: modern community planning.
As we drove around the area, all we saw were houses, lots of nice-looking homes. What we did not see were grocery stores and amenities such as restaurants, walking trails, parks, and a library. Where is evidence of modern urban planning for mixed use, for lower-income housing, for walkability?
Have Clark County leaders given builders free reign to fill acre after acre with homes for their own profit without any consideration for the needs of the community? Are our leaders unaware of modern trends in building livable communities? For example, I did not see any bus stops. More transit options are vital for elderly citizens who no longer drive. Has C-Tran planned for expansion to this area?
All county personnel who are involved in community planning should build more cooperative interaction between residential building and greater community needs. Perhaps the whole planning system needs to be overhauled.
