Letter: Loosen rules on marijuana

By Emily Hain, Vancouver
Published: December 7, 2016, 6:00am

Many medical marijuana patients across the state have challenges obtaining their medicine. Some citizens want to grow their own marijuana and do things with the plant that dispensaries do not offer, like using raw cannabis in different forms, because it is more beneficial. The problem with growing medical marijuana is that the city of Vancouver is more restrictive than the state.

These days, there are recreational marijuana dispensaries everywhere, which is a problem for the city’s image. City laws are much stricter than the state’s on growing medical marijuana at home. Vancouver does not permit medical marijuana to be grown in residential areas or four-person medical cooperatives. The state permits a four-person medical cooperative that allows a group to grow medical marijuana on their property.

If Vancouver would allow four-person cooperatives, then people who need it for medicine could obtain it, and also the community would be affected in a positive way. If cooperatives are allowed, then the number of dispensaries will go down; no one will be going out to buy their marijuana, it will be in their homes.
