The movie telling the story of Oregon’s own Tonya Harding, the champion figure skater whose career ended in disgrace, has a U.S. distributor lined up. As Deadline reports,Margot Robbie, who starred as Harley Quinn in the movie, “Suicide Squad,” will play Harding in “I, Tonya.” Miramax has acquired the U.S. distribution rights for the film, which will be released in 2018.

Harding became a sensation, first for emerging from a troubled childhood in Portland to become a figure skating champion, and then for the media storm that followed allegations that Harding was involved in an attack on her skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan.

Prior to the scandal, Harding had overcome considerable odds to become a star in the world of figure skating. She became the first U.S. woman to land a triple axel, at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 1991.

But everything started to crumble in January 1994, when Kerrigan, during a practice session, was attacked, and struck on the right knee by an assailant wieding a metal baton. During the investigation, charges flew that Jeff Gillooly, Harding’s husband at the time, had planned the attack.

As The Oregonian reported, Harding still showed up at the Clackamas Town Center skating rink to practice, denying any knowledge of the assault on Kerrigan, while national media swarmed around her.

Ultimately, Gillooly pled guilty to racketeering for his role in the attack, Kerrigan and Harding both competed in the 1994 Olympics (Kerrigan won a silver medal, and Harding finished eighth) and Harding pled guilty to conspiracy to hinder prosecution. The U.S. Figure Skating Association took away Harding’s U.S. title and banned her for life from competing.

Robbie, an Australian actress best known for her glamorous role in “The Wolf of Wall Street” and as the sexy psycho Harley Quinn in “Suicide Squad,” is quoted in the Deadline report saying the script for “I, Tonya” is “unbelievable, it’s unlike anything I’ve read before.”

The script is by Steven Rogers (“Stepmom”) and Craig Gillespie (“Lars and the Real Girl”) is directing.
