Letter: Be careful what you wish for

By Jackson Colby, VANCOUVER

Reading through the letters section, one can see so much euphoria and despair due to the election.

The euphoria usually comes from the backwoods communities that surround Vancouver while the despair tends to come from the Portland metro. One writer invited Canada to annex Washington, Oregon and California, suggesting that our bags are already packed.

This may well be true, and it’s a fun thought. But I warn the writer: Be careful what you wish for. If the West Coast joined Canada, it would essentially ensure that Republicans win in every presidential election going forward. Democrats might be able to do without Washington and Oregon, but they absolutely require California’s 55 electoral votes to win the presidency.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
