PORTLAND — Court records show that an Oregon man who fatally shot a police officer and was then killed by another officer had a criminal history dating back to at least the early 1980s.

The Oregonian reports that 55-year-old Phillip Ferry shot Seaside police Sgt. Jason Goodding on Friday. Goodding was trying to arrest Ferry on a warrant for felony assault.

Another Seaside officer returned fire, killing Ferry.

Records show that Ferry had been convicted of several crimes in six different Oregon counties since October 1983. Jail records show he was booked into Clatsop County Jail 41 times since May 1991.

Clatsop County District Attorney Joshua Marquis says deputies told him Ferry fought with officers every time he was arrested.
