Letter: Discriminating practices imposed

By Jim and Kay Postma, Vancouver

We should all applaud the religious, nonreligious and governmental groups/individuals around the world who profess/practice “justice for all” and compassionately fight poverty, condemn greed and work against exclusionary issues. Some of these groups/individuals, while wonderfully working to reduce poverty and addressing greed, still have discriminating practices such as:

1. Promoting lower working wages and denying leadership roles for qualified minorities and women.

2. Prohibiting reproductive control choices.

3. Denying same-sex marriage.

Groups/ individuals are certainly entitled to their exclusionary opinions/beliefs as a choice applied “only” to themselves. However, if “justice for all” is their intention, then they should not be permitted to impose or legislate their exclusionary beliefs directed against the rights/choices of minorities, women and gays.

The solution, admittedly challenging, requires eliminating exclusionary beliefs, thereby bringing everyone under the umbrella of working towards “justice for all.”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
