CORVALLIS, Ore. — A new study by Oregon State University indicates that injuries in the deadly commercial crab fishing industry go largely unreported.
The EO Media Group reports that the study found that while the crab industry’s rate of fatal injuries was 65 times higher than the rate for all U.S. workers, reported nonfatal injuries were actually 3 times lower than the national rate.
OSU assistant professor Laurel Kincl says the fatality rates have been previously reported, but no one appears to have looked into the number of nonfatal injuries. She says her study is part of an OSU-led project to identify and reduce the risk of injuries in the industry.
Kincl and her colleagues plan to meet with focus groups of fishermen along the Pacific coast to learn more about industry safety.
