Clark men sink Lane in NWAC South opener, 92-83

No. 1 Lane women top Clark, 85-69

Four players scored in double figures as the Clark College men’s basketball team opened NWAC South Region play with a 92-83 win over Lane on Saturday at the O’Connell Center.

David Baze made 8 of 13 shots to lead the Penguins (10-3, 1-0) with 21 points.

“He gave us a real spark,” Clark coach Alex Kirk said of Baze. “We’ve played a lot of tough games lately and it’s paid off.”

Bryan Berg had 19 points with four 3-pointers, Glenn Baral had 13 points, and Miles Martin 10. Union High grad Micah Paulson had five points, seven rebounds and six assists.

“Guys are finding a way to contribute like Micah Paulson,” Kirk said. “It’s stuff like that that will help define our season, when maybe it’s not your night offensively but you get seven rebounds.”

NWAC scoring leader Usama Zaid had 25 points for Lane (12-2, 0-1).

WOMEN: Lane 85, Clark 69 — The Penguins held their own with the NWAC No. 1 Titans early on before falling in the South Region opener.

Clark (8-5) played Lane even in the first quarter, 22-22, but Lane (14-0) pulled away in the second and third quarters.

Caylee Newsom led the Penguins with 24 points on 7 of 12 shooting with six 3-pointers. Brean Nueku had 17 points and five assists, and Molly Franklin had 10 points. Livia Strandberg had eight points and eight rebounds.
