The host Panthers shook off the rust from an extended break and held off the Lumberjacks rally for the 2A Greater St. Helens League victory.

Washougal (5-5, 1-1) led by 12 entering the fourth quarter. But R.A. Long (5-5, 1-1) hit three 3-pointers in the closing minutes to make for a close finish.

The Lumberjacks had a chance to tie or win after the Panthers made one of two foul shots with less than three seconds left. But a long pass went out of bounds and Washougal was able to run out the clock.

Washougal coach Malcom Estes noted that his team had not been in the gym since Thursday because of school closures and said his Panthers played a better game than he expected after the layoff.

“We moved the ball well (on offense) and we played great defense,” Estes said. “We did a good job on the boards and contested avery shot.”

Washougal might have won more comfortably, but the Panthers were 6-for-20 from the foul line ncluding 4 for 11 in the fourth quarter.

Matt Rotundo led Washougal with 16 points and Collin Prangley added 15. Rotundo and Josh Bischoff each grabbed seven rebounds. Prangley had two steals for layups in the first half and blocked two shots.
