VANCOUVER — The Fort Vancouver National Trust is seeking nominations for the leadership awards honoring Gen. George C. Marshall.
A nominee for the adult Marshall Public Leadership Award must be a resident of Clark County, 35 or younger, with a four-year college degree. Criteria includes leadership ability, commitment to public service, academic achievement and potential for an ongoing active role in public service. The award includes $2,200 toward a trip to the Marshall Foundation in Lexington, Va., Colonial Williamsburg and Washington, D.C.; opportunities to work with community leaders; and a scholarship for Leadership Clark County.
Marshall Youth Leadership nominees must be county residents in the 12th grade. Criteria include activities and projects demonstrating the values represented by Marshall. The award includes a $2,500 college scholarship, a $500 summer internship in the Trust’s Celebrate Freedom office, a chance to meet local elected officials and a chance to take part in Celebrate Freedom events.
Deadline for adult nominations is Feb. 2; deadline for youth nominations is Feb. 12. Nomination forms are available at fortvan.org/marshallawards and at the Trust’s offices in the Gen. O.O. Howard House, 750 Anderson St., Vancouver. The award dinner will be on March 9 at the Artillery Barracks Building in the West Barracks.
From 1936 to 1938, Marshall commanded the Army’s 5th Infantry Brigade at Vancouver Barracks. He was Army chief of staff during World War II and was awarded the 1953 Nobel Peace Prize.
