Letter: Focus on mental health

As we get into the election season, more is being said about gun violence. Gun violence is deplorable.

Politicians are not addressing the real issues. In my previous profession, if there was an unintended event, you would conduct a “root cause analysis.” This would determine the cause and recommend corrective measures to prevent additional occurrences. Obama alluded to the problem by saying that most gun-related deaths are self-inflicted (80 percent in Washington). Most police shootings involve people with mental health issues. Most homicides involve people who know each other. These shooters have mental health issues as the basis for the shooting. Can a healthy, rational person take the life of another human without cause?

Mental health is the common issue, so why did our president pledge only $500 million to fight mental health problems and billions for additional gun controls?

When you distribute that $500 million over the 50 states, it doesn’t go very far. Gun control advocates don’t want to control access to guns, they want to eliminate gun ownership. What could they do if they concentrated that same money, ambition and effort to treating mental health issues?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
