I can’t remember when a newspaper story made me as angry as “Blind teen girl has successful hunt” on July 11. I am sure that I am not the only one who felt that way.
I question the judgment and motives of family and the nonprofit who arranged for handicapped children to go out and murder wildlife. Most organizations involving the handicapped do exactly the opposite; they teach them how to protect and nurture our fellow creatures. Many organizations teach the handicapped to train animals to become therapy dogs, cats and horses, etc.
I can accept a hunter’s argument, that he/she hunts for the meat. But this blind girl was given all the help to learn to kill, for absolutely no reason. You can’t even talk about the “thrill,” because she really did not see the whole procedure, since it was done for her by mechanical means.
Even though she will not eat the meat, she will have a rug to remember the glorious event.
