VANCOUVER — YWCA Clark County’s SafeChoice domestic violence shelter is now accommodating residents who have pets.

The agency recently received $5,600 from the Red- Rover Safe Housing Grant Program to convert the shelter to a pet-friendly safe haven. The change went into effect July 1.

YWCA is also teaming up with The Humane Society for Southwest Washington and the VCA East Mill Plain Animal Hospital to provide shelter residents’ pets veterinary care, supplies and alternative shelter for pets with extra needs. The Humane Society will also provide special training to all SafeChoice staff and volunteers.

The goal is to remove barriers for victims seeking safety and shelter who are unwilling to leave their pets behind.

SafeChoice serves 1,400 people who have experienced domestic violence each year through its emergency shelter, 24-hour hotline, support groups, in-person support, resources and a free legal clinic staffed by volunteer lawyers.

For immediate assistance, contact YWCA’s 24-hour crisis hotline at 360-695-0501 or toll free at 1-800-695-0167.
