High 5 Pizza piles on fresh flavor at low price

Why: High 5 Pizza provides two sizes of pizza made with homemade sauces and dough and fresh-cut toppings. Conveniently located on Fourth Plain Boulevard, the take-and-go pizza parlor is known for its tasty, quality pizza at a bargain price.

What I tried: I tried the O.G. Pepperoni, a classic pepperoni and mozzarella cheese with red sauce; the Hippie, a vegetarian combination of black olives, onions, bell pepper, mushrooms and pineapple with mozzarella cheese and red sauce; the Hawaiian, made with Canadian bacon, pineapple, mozzarella cheese and red sauce; and the Gourmet Chicken Garlic, made with garlic white sauce, chicken, green bell pepper and onion with mozzarella cheese.

I found all the pizzas very good, and each had a reasonable balance of ingredients. The red sauce was flavorful, but it did not have a distinct, proprietary flavor that some establishments’ red sauces have.

The toppings were exceptionally fresh. The two toppings that stood out were the pineapple for its sweet, fresh quality and the olives, which tasted like olives should. The pepperoni was not overly spicy or greasy. The combination on the Hippie pie was made unique by the inclusion of pineapple, bringing a sweet element to the otherwise predictable toppings. The Canadian bacon on the Hawaiian was lean and delicious.

The chicken garlic pizza was very good, but I had hoped for a bit more garlic in the sauce. All of the chicken on the pie was void of unpleasant chewiness, which I appreciated. I ordered four large pizzas, which came to roughly $30. Each pizza provided eight slices. I will definitely return to High 5 Pizza. In my opinion, they create a quality pie for a bargain price.

Menu highlights beyond what I tried: The Suprema pizza is topped with pepperoni, Italian sausage, beef, mushrooms, olives and onions. The Maui Wowie is half Suprema and half Hawaiian. The Firecracker, which is topped with pepperoni, pineapple slices, jalape?o, bacon bits and Parmesan cheese with red sauce, sounded like a sweet and spicy treat. Toppings include standard meat choices and vegetable options. In addition to red sauce and garlic white sauce, pesto sauce is available. Sides include white truffle cheese sticks and chicken wings. Bottled Arizona, San Pellegrino, Hawaiian Sun and Coke beverages are available.

Atmosphere: The pizza kitchen is larger than many take-and-go establishments, and there is more while-you-wait seating. A colorful, easy-to-read chalk menu board, a selection of different types of chairs (including a leather sofa) and a few live plants add interest to the space. Help-yourself drink coolers near the entry offer plenty of beverage choices.

Other observations: Wait time was approximately 15 minutes for the four pizzas I ordered. High 5 Pizza takes phone orders.

Cost: Sides are $4.99. Specialty pizzas cost $4.99 to $9.99 for a 14-inch large and $9.99 to $15.99 for an 18-inch Jumbo. You may build your own pizza for $4.99 (Large) and $9.99 (Jumbo), plus the cost of toppings. Toppings for a large pizza are $1.25 to $1.75 each and for a jumbo pizza are $1.75 to $2.25 each.
