ARIEL — PacifiCorp has been named Landowner of the Year for Southwest Washington by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Guy Norman, regional director for the agency, touted PacifiCorp’s management of more than 13,000 acres of elk habitat, ranging from young to old-growth forests, meadows, wetlands, orchards and oak patches.

“Their outstanding land management has served as a backdrop to teach other entities the methods to achieve robust habitats,” Norman said. “Their management practices have been used as a real-world example, illustrating creative methods that our staff can implement elsewhere.”

PacifiCorp’s lands are open free of charge to public access.

The utility has recently awarded a grant of $16,000 for habitat enhancement on Eagle Island.
