Letter: Few offer solutions to mentally ill

A schizophrenic man lives near our property in Hazel Dell. His mother looked out for him until she died in 2014, leaving him the property. As far as I can determine, he’s alone in this world. I’ll call him “Bob,” not his real name. Bob is living in an old mobile home that looks abandoned. He has smashed the windows out, has no running water and no electrical service. God only knows what he eats, or what he’s using for bathroom facilities.

I have contacted every single county and state agency I can think of, and not one can or will do anything to help this man, other than to offer him information. They all say he has “rights” and can live as he chooses, even though, because he’s not competent to make decisions for himself, that means Bob is literally living like an animal.

So here’s the bottom line: In this supposedly compassionate society we live in, if they have no one to advocate for them, the mentally ill are completely abandoned. We, as a society, should be disgusted. The mental health community, and this state’s legislators, should hang their heads in shame.
