Camas’ Gianan advances to 4A state semis

Two singles players, three doubles teams will earn medals on Saturday

Camas junior Hannah Gianan cruised into the 4A state tennis singles semifinals with a pair of wins Friday at Richland.

She defeated Shaelyn Huot of Lake Stevens 6-1, 6-0, and then Megan Hagerty of Graham-Kapowsin 6-2, 6-0.

“It was a pretty good day. Wasn’t too stressful,” she said.

Gianan, a junior who has won two state doubles titles, will face Joyce Park of Gig Harbor in Saturday morning’s semifinal. Park placed fourth at state in singles last year.

No other area players advanced to Saturday’s winner’s side of the bracket, however, seven other area players (which includes doubles teams) will place at state.

Mountain View senior Amila Gogalija, the 4A district champ, won her first match 6-0, 6-0 but then lost 6-4, 6-2 to Timberline’s Angela Schuster in the quarterfinals to fall into the fourth-place bracket.

Gogalija easily advanced to Saturday’s fourth-place final with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Newport’s Teagan Mach.

In 4A doubles, Union’s Sydney Wallace and Mckenzie Schreiner also had a 6-0, 6-0 first-round win. They then lost a tough three-setter to Crystal Lee and Ally Peterson of Thomas Jefferson 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

The Union duo then cruised in the fourth-place semifinal 6-1, 6-2 to guarantee a medal.

In 3A action at Kennewick, Columbia River’s Owen Carlson and Nathan Crary will be playing for fifth place Saturday after going 2-1 on the first day. After losing a close first match, Carlson and Crary rolled to two victories to stay alive and assure themselves a medal on Saturday.

Columbia River singles players Lauren Skelly and Faith Grisham both went 0-2 and were eliminated.

Hudson’s Bay players went 0-2 in the 2A tournament in Seattle. Jose Ignacio Perez was eliminated in singles, and Bailey Ridgway and Alex Mertvyy were eliminated in a third-set super tiebreaker 10-7.

Two Ridgefield girls doubles teams ended up meeting each other in the fourth-place semifinal. Sarah Kaufman and Sophie Bird, and Kylei Harrison and Emily Persons both came back from a first set loss to win their first-round match in three sets, but then lost in the quarterfinals.

Kaufman and Bird eliminated their teammates 3-6, 6-1, 10-3 to secure a medal on Saturday.

In the 1A tournament at Yakima, Jasmine Nesbitt of King’s Way Christian went 1-2 and was eliminated.

In 4A boys singles at Richmond, Skyview’s Andrew Kabacy played on an injured ankle and lost his first round match 6-4, 7-5. He then withdrew from the tournament because of the injury.
