A fire that heavily damaged a Battle Ground house Monday was caused by a rag used for staining wood that spontaneously heated, investigators said.

Firefighters from Clark County Fire District 3 responded to the fire just before 1 p.m. at a house at 2611 N.W. Sixth St.

No one was injured. The homeowners weren’t home at the time of the blaze, and a dog that was home during the fire escaped unharmed.

The fire, which climbed the side of the house and burned up the attic, caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, Clark County Deputy Fire Marshal Richard Martin said.
