Save the Date: Shakespeare, musicals, dramas prepare to take stage

Fall theater productions are in full swing, with musicals, dramas and Shakespeare to delight in the autumn night.

Washougal High School Drama presents “Failure: A Love Story,” which is set in the 1930s, exploring the deaths and lives of the three Fail sisters through funny and moving situations. The production begins at 7 tonight with more shows at 7 p.m. Nov. 18-19 at Washougal High School, 1201 39th St., Washougal. The Camas High School Drama Department brings Shakespeare’s comedy “Twelfth Night,” to the stage. After a shipwreck, Viola disguises herself as a young man to enter the service of Duke Orsino, who is in loved with Countess Olivia, who falls for the disguised Viola, who in turn might be in love with the Duke. The Battle Ground High School Drama Club will perform “The Crucible,” the play set in Salem, Mass., in 1692, as Abigail, niece of the town minister, accuses several local women of witchcraft. Vancouver School of Arts and Academics revives the classic musical “The Pirates of Penzance,” which follows Frederic, an indentured servant to a band of tender-hearted pirates. The production begins at 7 tonight, with more shows at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 and 17-19 at the Royal Durst Theatre, VSAA, 3101 Main St., Vancouver. Vancouver’s Metropolitan Community Theatre Project has created an interactive whodunit musical that lets the audience be the detectives in “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” based on the unfinished Charles Dickens’ novel. The performances begin at 2 p.m. and 7:30 tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday, with more performances Nov. 17-20 at the Brunish Theatre, 1111 S.W. Broadway, Portland. Mark your calendar for the Vancouver Community Tree Lighting from 3:30 to 6:40 p.m. Nov. 25. The event will feature music by Touch of Class Chorale and the Vancouver Pops Orchestra, with Santa arriving at 6 p.m. to light the tree in Esther Short Park, West Columbia and Sixth streets, Vancouver.

It’s all part of the annual the Vancouver Festival of Trees, with proceeds benefiting the Vancouver Rotary’s scholarship program. See the decorated trees, say hello to Santa, Mrs. Claus and the elves, enjoy performances by local choir, band and dance groups, holiday markets and more. Magenta Theater presents “Parfumerie,” a holiday romance that follows perfumery employee George Horvath, who constantly feuds with his co-worker Amalia Balash. But George finds solace and romance in writing letter to a secret pen pal, who’s agreed to meet for Christmas Eve.
