TACOMA — Tacoma-based MultiCare Health System is expanding its reach into Eastern Washington with the $425 million purchase of two Spokane-area hospitals and a network of clinics.

The not-for-profit health care organization announced Thursday that it is buying Deaconess Hospital in Spokane and Valley Hospital in Spokane Valley. It’s also buying Rockwood clinics, a network of primary, specialty and urgent care clinics in the Inland Northwest.

The News-Tribune says facilities are owned by Rockwood Health System, a subsidiary of struggling Tennessee-based Community Health Systems, Inc.

Rockwood spokesman George Hampton says the purchase includes a commitment from MultiCare to offer jobs to all Rockwood employees in good standing. The purchase is expected to be completed in spring.
