Letter: Crack down on sanctuary cities

I saw on the news that Seattle Mayor Ed Murray is defiant in his attitude towards Donald Trump over harboring what are, in fact, criminals. This “sanctuary city” stance is irritating to anyone who thinks that federal laws should be enforced.

A city arrests someone, learns they are here illegally, and refuses to contact federal immigration services. If Trump can figure out how to withhold all federal dollars that go to Seattle and any other sanctuary city, it would be great. Unfortunately this “catch and release” by Seattle and other sanctuary cities is done without disclosure to anyone.

Seattle city policies are contrary to federal law, which has precedence. Federal law should have precedence when it comes to anyone living in this country illegally — pretty simple.

Federal law states that a city cannot have a policy that prevents city employees from sharing information on a person’s immigration status. What is needed is a conscientious city employee who gives this information to the Feds. When an undocumented individual is released back out onto the street that information is released to the INS. And based on that information, federal funds are withheld from the city.

Murray states, “Seattle has always been a welcoming city.” He forgot to finish the sentence and say “even to those who are living here illegally.” Portland Mayor-elect Ted Wheeler has the same attitude.
