Letter: Sidewalks, trees need upkeep

By Stephen I. Freimuth, Vancouver

If you see me walking in the middle of the streets in the Carter Park neighborhood, here’s the reason: Our sidewalks are literally falling apart and crumbling in some areas and beyond repair. The curbs in some areas are impossible to descend and step up to.

The total neglect of the street trees makes it impossible for most to walk under or around them; in most cases, they are planted and then left for homeowners to tend with no to little education on how to care for them.

I watched some street trees being installed at my neighbors’, next to the already-untended bushes in their yard.

Perhaps the miles of new sidewalks and curbs in the new waterfront project would serve better in Carter Park than in the empty project that appears to be a joke on all of us.

I’ve been asked several times if I want the trees. No thanks, I’m enjoying watching the trees already planted trash our neighborhood.

P.S.: Please use your ashtrays! I’ll elaborate on this at another time. Peace be with us all.
