Clark athletics: Garvin wins George Fox Invitational

Clark College cross country runner Sam Garvin could be in the running for a third NWAC athlete of the week honor.

The Mountain View High grad won the Wes Cook/George Fox Invitational on Saturday at Willamette Mission State Park in Brooks, Ore., covering the 8K course in 25 minutes, 35.4 seconds.

Winner of the Week 4 and 5 NWAC weekly honor, Garvin finished 6.6 seconds in front of Michael Martin of Lane.

Clark placed ninth out of 13 teams with 237 points. UO Running Club won with 27, and Lane was second with 97.

The Clark women were lead by Union High grad Cassie McKinney, who was ninth overall. She finished the 6K course in 23:15.2.

Clark did not have enough runners for a team score.

Clark’s next race is the NWAC Southern Region Championships on Oct. 29 at Clackamas.

VOLLEYBALL: The second day of the Lower Columbia Crossover was cancelled due to severe weather conditions.

On Friday’s first day, Clark went 3-0 with wins over Spokane (25-16, 25-14), Olympic (25-12, 27-25) and South Puget Sound (25-13, 25-17).

The Penguins (21-8, 6-1 NWAC South) next host Umpqua at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the O’Connell Sports Center.

Clark is ranked fifth in this week’s NWAC coaches poll.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: The Penguins (12-2-0, 9-0-0 South) are ranked third in this week’s coaches poll. They had a bye on Saturday.

Clark hosts its final regular-season home match at 2 p.m. Wednesday against Rogue. With three matches to play, the Penguins have already clinched a postseason berth.

MEN’S SOCCER: The Penguins had a bye on Saturday. They are tied for second in the NWAC South with Portland, both 6-3-1 in the division and six points behind leader Chemeketa.

Clark (6-6-2 overall) hosts its final regular-season home match at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Rogue. The Penguins have four matches remaining.
