PORTLAND — Six Grants Pass police officers were involved in the Oct. 13 shooting of a man, according to information released Sunday by the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office.

Four officers used lethal force. They are Det. Ryan Brown, Det. John Lohrfink, Officer Scott Williams and Officer Mike Miner.

Two others were present and deployed less lethal force. They are Officer Jason Peil and Officer Andrew Aguinaga.

The incident began around 7:27 a.m. Oct. 13 when several people called 911 about an SUV driving erratically and crashing into vehicles in the Grants Pass Wal-Mart parking lot, police said. Other callers said the driver left the area and began traveling the wrong way on Highway 199, police said. The driver crashed into a guardrail near the highway’s intersection with F Street, police said.

The Grants Pass Department of Public Safety officers arrived soon after. They found Shawn Pappe, 46 of Gold Hill, sitting in the SUV with a knife, they said.

Officers said they tried to negotiate with Pappe for about 20 minutes. He then got out of the car, they said, and confronted the nearby officers with the knife. Officers used a Taser and bean-bag rounds, they said. Pappe continued walking toward the officers, they said. The officers then fired shots at him.

Pappe received immediate medical attention, police said, but was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
