Letter: Prop. 1 is the decent thing to do

I am a pastor’s son, and my family instilled in me the virtues of helping one’s neighbors, caring for the sick and the poor, and trying to do what’s right in the world. Today, as executive director of Habitat for Humanity, I believe everyone deserves a decent place to live. That’s why I support the Affordable Housing Fund — Proposition 1.

Seniors who built this community, veterans, people with disabilities, and hardworking families are being priced out of Vancouver, but we can do something about it.

Our community has seen rents rise more than 38 percent in the last five years. By voting yes on Proposition 1, you will be doing what’s right, helping to ensure that everyone in Vancouver has the opportunity to live in a safe, affordable home.

I’ll leave you with the words of Habitat’s founder, Millard Fuller: “Everyone — all of us, every last person on God’s Earth — deserves decent shelter. It speaks to the most basic of human needs — our home — the soil from which all of us, every last person, either blossom or wither. We each have need of food, clothing, education, medical care, and companionship; but first we must have a place to live and grow.”
