Letter: School bond deserves ‘no’ vote

Regarding the Battle Ground school bond proposal, don’t be misled by the claims that the increase will be a paltry $11 a month. Your tax bill will very likely increase much more as that value is based on the median property value and half of all properties are valued more, sometimes much more, which may well include your property. Remember, this is an increase, not a replacement.

To make things worse, the county is now considering an increase in the county tax rate and for those on fixed incomes. These higher tax payments will have to come from somewhere. Even when this proposal is defeated, school tax revenue will continue to rise as property values increase and more properties are developed. Consider all the new building in the area and realize each new home in these crowded developments will pay to the general and school fund what you are paying now. If new facilities are needed, they should be funded within the existing tax rate and if new funds are needed, I will gladly contribute my $4 Social Security raise. I urge a NO vote on the Battle Ground school tax increase.
