SALEM, Ore. — Oregon’s Grand Ronde tribe is appealing a decision to allow the Cowlitz tribe to build a casino in La Center, Washington, to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Statesman Journal reports that the Grand Ronde tribe has decided to appeal the decision to the federal high court after the U.S. Circuit Court of appeals denied its request on July 29. Tribal members were informed of the filing decision at an Aug. 31 council meeting.
The tribe is contesting a lower court’s ruling to allow the Cowlitz tribe to establish a reservation in Clark County, Washington. The Cowlitz tribe plans to build a 368,000-square-foot casino there.
The Grand Ronde tribe estimates it will lose 41 percent of its revenue if the Cowlitz tribe’s Ilani casino is permitted to open.
