Why: Charlie’s Sports Bar and Grill provides a large-scale game place where food, drinks and fun abound and where the whole family can gather until 9 p.m. After that, the 21 and older crowd has it to themselves. Charlie’s was re-established in 2013 after being closed for over a year. The new owners have since enjoyed the success of their sports bar and grill. Charlie’s serves lunch and dinner, and breakfast on the weekends.

What I tried: My dining companions and I started with the build-your-own sampler, for which we chose boneless chicken wings, potato skins, steak bites and Southwest egg rolls. I also ordered the fajita wrap with chicken. My dining companions had the blue cheese burger, the hula burger and the tachos.

Our appetizer sampler arrived surprisingly fast, and everything else followed quickly thereafter. All the items on the sampler were tasty, and three different dipping sauces were included — a horseradish sauce for the steak bites, chipotle ranch and wing sauce. There was sour cream for the potato skins as well. My favorite of the appetizers was the egg rolls, which had a mixture of smoked chicken, black beans, corn, jalapeno Jack cheese, red peppers and spinach within a crispy flour tortilla.

The fajita wrap was packed with a deliciously seasoned, saut?ed combination of chicken, bell peppers and onions along with Jack and cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole and a touch of sour cream. The ingredients were rolled into a large, flour tortilla and grilled shut to create a tidy meal in a pocket.

We were most surprised by the tachos, which began with a foundation of tater tots. Layered on top was Colby Jack cheese, cheddar cheese, nacho cheese, seasoned ground beef (you may opt for fajita chicken or pulled pork), pico de gallo, olives, jalapenos, sour cream and guacamole. My dining companion ordered the half size, which we all agreed easily could be shared among at least three people.

The burgers were gourmet style, large, juicy and aptly named for their respective ingredients. Charlie’s fries were a notch above standard with an appetizing, crispy batter exterior.

Atmosphere: Charlie’s occupies the end cap of an industrial building and had a comfortable, friendly vibe that got livelier as the evening progressed. Tables and chairs were tall and filled in the floor space without it feeling overcrowded. The bar had seating as well. Three pool tables and 40 TVs provided entertainment. Walls displayed an array of airbrush art in a rainbow of colors.

Menu highlights beyond what I tried: Sandwiches includes a pulled pork, French dip, Reuben and a gyro. Burgers are made with never frozen, half-pound patties and include a version made with a fried egg, ham, bacon, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles. There is also a jalapeno burger; avocado burger; a Texas burger made with barbecue sauce, fried onion strings, bacon and cheddar cheese; and a chili cheeseburger among the options. Burgers are served with bottomless fries, tots or sweet potato fries. For an extra dollar you can have garlic fries. Quarter-pound hot dogs come in a bacon-wrapped cheese, chili cheese or a plain version. Tacos and a burrito are available. Pizza comes in a personal size or family sizes. Breakfast on the weekends is limited to breakfast tachos; biscuits and gravy; and a three-egg, build-your-own omelet with hash browns and toast.

Other observations: The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was unique and comfortable. Some food portions were surprisingly large for the cost.

Cost: Appetizers cost $6.99 to $12.99. Salads are $2.99 to $11.99. Burgers range from $9.99 to $14.99. Quarter-pound hot dogs cost $6.99 and $7.49. Sandwiches and wraps are $7.99 to $10.49. A half sandwich and salad is $7. Pizzas are $6.99 to $22.99. Other options are all under $10. There are $1.25 specials on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during happy hour. Sunday breakfast options are $5.99, $6.95 and $8.99.
