Letter: Reactions are informative

Last weekend, my husband and I joined about 30 other MoveOn and Indivisible members in one of the Vancouver rallies protesting President Trump’s refusal to show his tax returns. It wasn’t a huge turnout but it was Easter weekend, after all.

As we stood on a busy street, holding our signs, it was interesting to see the response. We received lots of thumbs up and horn honks, smiles and cheers through open car windows. We also received thumbs down and a number of “middle finger salutes” and a few lewd comments. It was interesting that most of the latter came from unwashed pick-up trucks and two very expensive sports cars. It became obvious, after a short while, which is the Trump demographic. Even if we suspected this in advance, it was interesting to see it happening in real time.

Those we wondered about most were the people who drove by us or stopped at the red light next to us, who stared straight ahead and would not look in our direction. Were these people who voted for Trump and are now embarrassed? Were they people who hated or loved what we stand for, but just didn’t want to get involved? They showed no reaction at all. Who are they? What were they thinking? And how will they vote next time? Or will they vote at all?
