Letter: Herrera Beutler missed great event

On April 20, I attended an empty chair town hall for Jaime Herrera Beutler. She chose not to attend the meeting even though she was invited via email, phone calls and letters.

As I did not see any mention in The Columbian about the event, I thought I would let Vancouver know that it was attended by more than 250 people, lasted two hours, and many citizens asked important questions on several topics of local and national interest. Everyone in attendance was from this area. No one was bused in nor paid to attend this meeting.

Fittingly, there were no demonstrations, arguments, shouting or ranting at any time. The discourse was civil, orderly and illustrated the concerns of the constituents in her district. Finally, the audience was multigenerational, an aspect of our current political climate that bodes well for the future of democracy.

It is important for all citizens to be informed and have their voices heard, regardless of their political leanings. And, it is more important for those citizens to be able to meet their representative in a community setting for an open exchange of ideas — regardless of the representative’s political leanings.
