Clark County – Beginning Friday and lasting through Labor Day, more Clark County law enforcement personnel will be on the road to combat a sobering reality: Summer is the deadliest season for drivers.

Each summer in Washington, an average of 149 people die in traffic crashes, according to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

And the agency said that impaired drivers are a big reason for the tragedies.

In 2016, there were 277 deaths and 371 injuries resulting from crashes that involved impaired drivers, according to the traffic safety commission.

Extra officers, troopers and deputies will be on patrol over the roughly two-week period, looking for drunk and drugged drivers.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol and Vancouver, Battle Ground, La Center, Ridgefield and Washougal police departments are all participating in the effort.
