PORTLAND — Portland has officially said goodbye to its mounted patrol unit.

Four horses were present for Wednesday’s decommissioning ceremony at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Dozens of people took pictures with Asher, Diesel, Major and Olin.

The unit disbanded this summer after Portland City Council cut funding.

The horse patrol was originally established in 1875. It came and went several times before returning full-time in the late 1970s.
