I have given the invocation at the Clark County council meeting three times. I regret seeing it become a point of contention.
Hypothetically, under the current system, the councilors could be required to allow a Satan worshipper to lead the invocation. Satan is the archenemy of God. It would be just as offensive to have the council open their meeting by saluting the flag of al-Qaida as to begin with an invocation that is an insult to God.
What to do? The councilors could eliminate the invocation. By default, this would give those opposed to God exactly what they want. The councilors could fix the current system, but no one knows how. A better option is that the board appoint a qualified chaplain. A chaplain is not an evangelist. A chaplain serves all people alike. Appointing a chaplain solves the invocation problem. However, if the councilors see no purpose for an invocation, then they should discontinue the custom.
In any event, I will continue to keep them in my prayers. I have been to a few of their meetings. I know they need all the prayer they can get.
